The 1880 Presidential election featured a match-up between Republican James Garfield and Democratic nominee Winfield Hancock. While the two were very close in the overall vote count (2000 votes) and tied with 19 states won each, Garfield won the electoral college by carrying the more populous northern states. By winning the election, Garfield kept control of the White House for the republican party.
